WELCOME TO AFTERGLOW: REDUX 2020
As you guys know, this lil' ole 'COVID19' virus has been messing with a bunch of event plans and despite all signs looking overwhelmingly positive with case numbers / day way down (7 at the time of writing), there’s still no firm clarity on ability to operate events, especially ones that rely on buses like Afterglow.
So we like many others have gone virtual for this year’s 2020 Afterglow (and Surf Coast Trail Marathon).
Yes, we know that come 21 November, there is a small possibility that some events may be starting to rev up, BUT, according to Dan’s Road Map as of now, group gatherings of more than 10 are not allowed and the NEXT step slated for 23 November (past event date) still only allows for gatherings of 50 outdoors. Essentially we cannot operate events until we reach “COVID Normal”. While that may happen (and we are cheering for it) it is not guaranteed and given the long lead logistics of event planning (and early costs), we just can’t green light an event as per usual conditions.
There MAY be some viability to gather on the Surf Coast and even on the course proper - pending restrictions at the time - so you never know - an informal ‘event’ may still take place, but it will not have the usual logistics (start/finish/buses/timing/marked course etc) and will essentially be a come and play at your leisure / responsibility IF COVID normal is reached by then. If so we do encourage you to come and play on the Surf Coast come 21 November.

Redux - “brought back, restored”
Yeah, okay, so it’s an artsy fartsy term that film directors like Francis Ford Coppola like to throw around when they wanna rejig their movies with some artsy fartsy additional scenes that the studio didn’t allow in the first version. Also known as ‘a Directors Cut’.
Well, we’re Race Directors, but this isn’t how we’d prefer to cut Afterglow, so this is the ‘Covid Cut’ – or how to have an event when you’re not having an event. A ‘Clayton’s’ event, if you will (older people will understand*).
So same unicorn date (21st November 2020), same unicorn buffoonery, same rainbow vibe, just with different locations across Australia (and the globe!) and under who knows what conditions, pending whatever the COVID regulations are come that date. [Come 21st November, maybe we will still be able to gather in small groups? Maybe even still down on the Surf Coast!]
Unfortunately, we just can’t do it in the organised and supported way we usually do for Afterglow (and Surf Coast Trail Marathon).
So for 2020 only we will do a Virtual Unicorn Gathering – which won’t be that virtual – you still have to get out and run, somewhere, some distance. It may even still hurt you. But you won’t need VR Goggles. You can immerse yourself on real trails, in real bush, with real tutus on.

Here’s the low down:
COST:
SOLO: $44 + Register Now fee (all distances)
FAMILY: $110 + Register Now fee ()2 x adults and 2 x kids under 18)
*if you have already entered and your entry fee was higher than $40, and you still wish to take part, there will be options of remainder refund or put remaining value towards 2021 event.
INCLUSIONS:

· Log your distance and time on a Strava Run Group (*platform TBC)
· Join in the Live morning feed, participate in photo posting and bombing!
TIME: we will have an allocated start time on Saturday PM as per usual.
LIVE STREAM: We will live stream a FB ‘start’ – we will be running the Surf Coast Walk (restrictions permitting) from Pt Addis. If restrictions allow – please do come down the Surf Coast and join us!

SO WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR THOSE WHO HAVE ENTERED AFTERGLOW OR SCTM ALREADY?
WE NEED YOU TO REGISTER YOUR WISH IN TERMS OF WHAT YOUR WOULD LIKE TO DO. SEE BELOW AND CLICK THE BUTTON BELOW TO REGISTER (*there is a ‘Payment’ page as part of the process - please just click complimentary - this is just so we capture your data and decision)
HERE ARE YOUR OPTIONS:
1. RUN THE UNICORN PARADE WTH US VIRTUALLY
Tick this box and we will put your currently paid entry fee towards the virtual entry ($44), with any remainder being refunded. You will receive in the post a unique race bib, a ‘Be The Trail Unicorn’ headsweat (i.e. like a Thir or Buff), a rainbow trail unicorn sticker, a rainbow unicorn sew on patch (half, mara and ultra only) and access to the online portal where you can record your official time (you will need a GPS file of sorts from a GPS watch or run app), plus potential to win prizes. More details about how we will run the virtual event can be found ABOVE.
*Note: if you have friends who had not entered Afterglow but want to be part of the fun for the virtual event, we will be opening p a separate entry portal for new entries soon!
2. DEFER ENTRY TO SURF COAST TRAIL MARATHON 2021 (JUNE)Tick this box if you want to take your entry fee and apply it to SCTM 2021 in June. We will apply your entry fee to the same distance (21km/42km) you have allocated under your current entry. If you want to change distances you will be able to do so once we load up the data in a new registration portal. **For 13km or 5km entrants wishing to defer, your fee will be applied to the lowest distance in SCTM (21km) but you will need to pay the difference in fee to fully register your entry.
3. DEFER ENTRY TO AFTERGLOW 2021 (NOVEMBER)
Tick this box if you want to take your entry fee and defer it to Afterglow 2021 in November. We will apply your entry to the same distance (21km/42km) you have allocated under your current entry. If you want to change distances you will be able to do so once we load up the data in a new registration portal. **For 42km or ultra entrants wishing to defer, your fee will be applied to the highest distance in Afterglow (21km) and we will arrange to refund the difference.
4. REQUEST A REFUNDTick this box if you won’t take part in the virtual and don’t want to defer your entry until one of the 2021 events. We will arrange a refund ASAP less the usual admin fee ($15 in this instance).
Again, we apologise for having to make the difficult decision to go virtual. Hopefully we can come November still herd together somewhat and shine the rainbow parade brightly where you may be, including potentially down the Surf Coast restrictions allowing.

And at this stage we fully plan to undertake our trail run tours in 2021, including England and Bhutan, along with a bunch of more local versions across The Grampians, Mt Buffalo, Great Ocean Walk and others.
